Organisation Name:

LATOMIA LATOUROS LTD

Our Good Circular Practice:

The production of Latouros’ calcareous limestone sand involves 3 stages of crushing. The last stage of the production process is the washing of the sand. The washing of the sand produces waste in the form of liquid sludge.

The waste is processed to remove the “clear water” from the sludge. Since 2004, Latouros Quarries has operated a fully automated water recycling plant to reduce its water usage and minimize the environmental impact of its sandwashing process. The recycling plant solidifies the remaining sludge with the use of three filter presses. The resulting “clear water” is reused in the
washing stage, and the solid sludge is transferred to the old quarry pit for rehabilitation with the use of a wheel loader and dumpers.

The company’s water recycling plant has won the following awards: 1st place at the UEPG Sustainable Development Awards in 2013 and 2nd place in the Environmental Award for Enterprises (from the Department of Environment in Cyprus) in the category Technology/Production Process.

In addition, we recently measured the environmental impact of our products, something that allows us to understand and manage our ecological footprint more effectively. Following this, our Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) have been verified and are now registered with the EPD International AB System

In 2019, Latomia Latouros Ltd has developed a construction and demolition recycling plant at its old quarry pit. The purpose of the recycling plant is to receive, sort and process construction and demolition waste for further recycling. The mixed C&D waste is sorted in the following main waste streams: minerals, metals, plastics, wood and other non-recycled materials.
